Quality assurance manager visits Carapo RC to counsel staff, students

One day after it was revealed that the principal of the Carapo RC Primary School had been away from work for the past month after being threatened by a parent, a Quality Assurance Manager visited the facility to begin intervention efforts with students and teachers.

Catholic Education Board of Management (CEBM) CEO Sharon Mangroo confirmed this yesterday.

She told Guardian Media that during the visit to the school at O’Meara Road, Arima, “the teachers were in good spirits.”

Saying the intervention strategies were aimed at boosting employee morale, Mangroo said it also included repainting the staff room and installing an air-condition unit.

“We will also have a psychologist speak with the teachers and we are arranging to meet with all the stakeholders, starting with the school administration, and then we will meet with the families, parents and guardians of the children in the school as well,” she said.

Stressing that the aim now was to repair and rebuild fractured relations within the school and community, the CEBM head added, “We want the relationship with the community on the level it should be, so that we all work together in the interest of the children.”

The principal has been on sick leave since September 19, after the parent of a student reportedly threatened her for reprimanding the child, after he was found to be involved in an incident outside the school.

Further to this, intimidatory tactics were allegedly being employed by a religious group in the area to frighten teachers, which has left them all traumatised.

On Tuesday, a team of officials from the Special Victims Department (SVD), led by Supt Michelle Rowley-Powder, visited the school and promised to begin counselling with the staff and students immediately.

They also vowed to ensure there was a heightened police presence during the course of the school day as they move to protect and reassure all parties involved.
