Saab announces review of 225 cases of detainees in post-election protests

Tarek William Saab, Attorney General of the Republic, announced this Friday the review of the judicial measures issued to 225 of the detained by state security agencies in post-election protests.

Saab read a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office at a press conference in which they point out that, based on new evidence and elements of evidence, they have carried out a thorough review of cases related to actions that occurred after the presidential elections of July 28.

“Considering that Venezuela is built on superior values ​​such as life, justice and human rights, as well as the due process enshrined in article 49 of the Magna Carta, highlighting the right to defense, the presumption of innocence and trial by “natural judges, 225 reviews of measures have been requested from defendants for these events that shocked the country and left the unfortunate number of 28 people dead, nearly 200 injured and 500 public and private property destroyed,” the official read.

“This action aims at family reunification, which consolidates the commitment to human rights,” he said.

Saab met with relatives of those detained in post-election protests

The attorney general pointed out that Tuesday and Wednesday Meetings were held with relatives of those detained during the post-election protests to hear their complaints.

After these meetings, the Public Ministry promised to expedite the processes of those detained in the post-election protests.

(He said) that the trials were beginning, that good things were coming for the boys, that the innocent are going to come out and look for the reality of all this,” Theany Urbina, mother of one of the 69 teenagers detained in the context of the post-election crisis.

Saab also indicated that They have held meetings throughout the country with relatives of those who died in the demonstrations.

He assured that this process is “attributable solely and exclusively to the Venezuelan State.”

«They do not have any morality or legal attribution or quality of any type, any NGO. “I clarify so that, after the Public Ministry and the competent bodies carry out this task, they come now to receive and continue receiving money to say that they had something to do with this action, which is solely and exclusively attributable to the Venezuelan State,” he said. .

And he added: “We are going to continue reviewing, we are going to continue looking at the cases that arise, because that is why Venezuela is recognized as a system that protects human rights.”

However, the official reiterated that whoever “has been responsible for criminal actions subject to a link as a direct participant in them will be punished.”
