San Fernando market vendors protest lack of security and poor conditions

Vendors and workers at the San Fernando market are protesting a lack of security and the poor, unsanitary conditions at the facility. 

Their protest follows an incident where a female public convenience worker was stabbed at the market just a few days ago. 

Ian Charles, Chairman of the Contractors and General Workers Trade Union branch for the San Fernando City Corporation, said the stabbing happened on Sunday. He criticised the market’s poor lighting, which has turned it into a hangout spot for drug addicts and homeless people.

Charles also pointed out that unoccupied vending stalls lining the road in front of the market create security risks. Despite the supposed presence of municipal police, he said no officers are there on a daily basis.

He added that the market lacks running water, the infrastructure is falling apart, the roof leaks, and the meat and fish sections are in terrible condition.

Guardian Media understands around 300 vendors and 40 workers operate at the market. 

San Fernando Mayor Robert Paris, when contacted, said he was currently in a meeting addressing these issues and would provide a statement afterward.
