Sanchez seeks unity in the EU to find a democratic solution in Venezuela

The president of the government, Pedro Sánchez, has explained that Spain will not recognise Edmundo González’s victory in Venezuela for now but will work for unity in the EU that allows for a margin of mediation until the end of the year and finds a solution that conveys the democratic will expressed at the polls by the Venezuelan people.

Sánchez guaranteed this work of Spain for unity in the press conference he offered at the end of his visit to China and in which reiterated that Spain welcomes opposition leader Edmundo González for humanity and to ensure that the PP’s criticism in this regard leaves them “naked in their inconsistency.”

In response to González’s welcome, the question has been raised as to what would have been the reaction of the opposition and Spanish society if a person had asked for asylum and been told no.

“Asylum is nothing more than a gesture of humanity, of humanitarian commitment by Spanish society and the government to a person who unfortunately suffers persecution and repression,” he added.

On the political level of this matter, he pointed out that the government has been clear and has at all times requested the publication of the electoral records of the presidential elections in Venezuela.

For this reason, he has not recognised Edmundo González’s victory and has defended the search for EU unity for a solution that reflects the democratic will of the Venezuelan people, which could mean the departure of Nicolás Maduro.

Sánchez reiterated this position in the debate in Congress on the PP’s non-binding motion calling for Edmundo González to be recognised as president and insisted on his criticism of the opposition for using this matter politically.
