Shabazz asked to resign by GFF
Golden Jaguars head coach and Trinidad and Tobago native Jamaal Shabazz has been asked to tender his resignation from the programme by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Executive Committee, according to a report in the Stabroek Newspapers yesterday.
The publication states that according to a source close to the federation and the senior men’s programme, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, “Jamaal Shabazz has been asked to resign by the GFF Executive Committee; he was asked since earlier in the week to tender his resignation from the team. It is unclear if he has actually resigned, but the GFF has not issued any official termination letter to him.”
The source further said, “Wayne Dover is expected to take over the team for the remainder of the year until the GFF advertises for a new coach. Some of the players want him to remain. Other than the string of bad results in League A that resulted in the team’s relegation, the main reason for the GFF asking for his resignation stems from the fact that Shabazz rather interestingly supported the Franklin Wilson slate against the Wayne Forde administration at the previous GFF Elections last year.”
Guardian Media Sports Desk reached out to coach Shabazz several times via his T&T and Guyanese phone contacts, but all efforts proved futile.
Shabazz, who first coached the Guyana Men’s National Football team, returned for a fourth time to replace Márcio Máximo, who coached the Guyana Men’s team from 2019 to August 2021.
Shabazz had two stints for Guyana from 2005 to 2008 and from August 2011 to October 2012, then 2014 to 2015 and from 2021 to present.
Guyana is ranked 161 in FIFA world rankings; however, the country’s best ever ranking was 86th and was achieved in 2010 during one of Shabazz’s tenures after he took over the reign of Coach two years after Guyana endured their worst ranking of 185. As of October 16, Guyana is ranked 20th in Concacaf out of 41 nations and 11th in CFU from among 31 countries.
