Siparia villagers protest for water

  • Oct, Wed, 2024

Residents of Zachariah Avenue, Thick Village, Siparia, came out with their empty containers during a protest over water this morning. With Iwer George’s song “Water” playing in the background, a group of residents, including elderly members, gathered on the road to express their frustration over the lack of water.

Ninety-four-year-old Theresa Elliot, along with her neighbours Edward Dansica, 90, and Olga Nottingham, 86, sat on chairs as they voiced their concerns. They reported that they received water this morning, but only for about 30 minutes, after which the taps ran dry again.

The residents questioned why they were the only community in the area not receiving a regular water supply. Resident Maurice Alexander complained that 15 households, comprising 63 residents, are affected. He explained that about ten years ago, the community was moved from normal service and placed under the San Francique system, resulting in a reduced water supply.

Instead of receiving water at least twice a week, residents began receiving water three days a month or less. Alexander stated that they have made several complaints that have fallen on deaf ears. If their concerns are not addressed, he warned that residents will intensify their actions.
