  • Sep, Sun, 2024

This Sunday, the National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) demanded the release of the Photojournalist Deysi Peñasomething that should happen because the deadline for the Prosecutor’s Office to present a final act against him is ending. That has not happened.

«45 days have passed since Deysi Peña’s presentation hearinga photojournalist arrested in Miranda and accused of terrorist crimes. She remains in prison without the Public Prosecutor’s Office presenting a conclusive act. If it does not do so, Deysi must be released,” the SNTP published in its social networks.

The photojournalist was arrested in Carrizal on August 2 by the National Police, while covering the post-election protests in that municipality of Miranda state. On August 4, she was transferred to the women’s prison in Ocumare del Tuy.

Deysi Peña was charged with alleged terrorism, inciting hatred, resisting authority, vandalism and damage to public and private property.

At least eight journalists are being held in Venezuela by the administration of Nicolás Maduro, which has reinvigorated repression and attacks against journalists and opponents after the presidential elections. International organisations have demanded an end to the harassment and the release of political prisoners.

The complete list of press workers is completed by Luis López, reporter from La Guaira; Yuosnel Alvarado, photojournalist from Barinas; Paúl León, cameraman from Trujillo; José Gregorio Camero, producer and presenter from Guárico; Eleángel Navas, photographer and community manager from Anzoátegui; Gilberto Reina, reporter from Bolívar, and Ana Carolina Guaita, reporter from La Guaira.
