Soranib Hernández asks the European Parliament to activate the ICC investigation into Venezuela
Lawyer Soranib Hernández de Deffendini, an expert in international law, assured that they requested before the European Parliament to activate cooperation with the International Criminal Court (ICC). to promote research on Venezuela that executes the latter.
In an interview with David Placer, Hernández said that this agreement was signed in 2006 and establishes a framework for judicial and criminal cooperation, so they seek to discuss the effectiveness and necessary actions to guarantee adequate follow-up of the case.
The expert states that the European Union intervention can revitalize the investigation into crimes against humanity committed in Venezuela by the government of Nicolás Maduro, especially if States Parties come together to denounce human rights violations in the country.
Likewise, he highlighted the importance of this Monday’s historic session, which – he said – could facilitate a statement on the current state of the investigation and the next steps to follow.
“We do not know if here on December 15 we will be able to move forward, but through this internal process, the investigation process can also be advanced a little, since while the prosecutor steps away, the other deputy takes him over, allowing the investigation not to stop. . This could allow the year 2024 to close with a statement: explain to us where the investigation is and what the next steps will be.”
