Spain calls on European leaders to discuss Venezuela crisis

Spain wants the leaders of the European Union to address the political crisis in Venezuela at the European summit to be held on October 17 and 18 in Brussels, with the intention of the EU “can take a decision” that contributes to the “solution” of the situation.

This was confirmed by the Secretary of State for the European Union, Fernando Sampedro, in statements to the press upon his arrival at the General Affairs Council meeting being held this Tuesday in the community capital.

“We are betting that this European Council can have some conclusions on which we are working to address the situation in Venezuela“, said Sampedro.

In this regard, the Spanish Secretary of State assured that from “the leadership position that the rest of the European partners recognize in this situation, having received (the Venezuelan opposition leader) Edmundo González”, of which It is about “raising the discussion to the level of leaders so that the EU can take a position to collaborate and participate in finding a solution”«.

Asked whether Spain expected EU leaders to take any specific decision regarding the situation in Venezuela, the Secretary of State avoided giving details because, with three weeks to go before the summit, the preparation of its conclusions is “at a very preliminary stage.”

Spain does not recognize Edmundo González as president of Venezuela

The European Union foreign ministers held a videoconference meeting with González at the end of August, but they avoided recognizing him as the legitimate president of Venezuelafollowing the July elections.

The EU also does not recognise the victory claimed by leader Nicolás Maduro, because he has not presented the official minutes of the vote and, for now, has avoided approving new sanctions against the Venezuelan regime.
