The Venezuelan NGO Súmate, dedicated to electoral matters, asked the State this Sunday to guarantee “a fair trial” and the “right to defense” for its national Training coordinator, Nélida Sánchez, arrested on August 26 by agents of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin).

“We request the State to guarantee his right to defense and a fair trial,” the organization expressed through X.

He recalled that on September 6, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the OAS granted precautionary measures in favor of Sánchezconsidering that he “finds himself in a serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable damage to his rights in Venezuela.”

Súmate has denounced on several occasions that Sánchez – who, according to the organization, is at the Sebin headquarters in Caracas, known as Helicoide – She has not been allowed access to “private lawyers” nor have her relatives been able to see her..

The arrest of the coordinator occurred in a context of political crisis after the controversial re-election of Nicolás Maduro in the presidential elections on July 28, a period in which the majority opposition, which denounces electoral “fraud”, has warned about the increase in the “persecution” and “repression” by the Government.

According to official figures, more than 2,400 people have been arrested since July 29 – some in demonstrations and others in police operations – and 25 were murdered in acts of violence that the Government attributes to the opposition, while anti-Chavismo blames the forces. of state security.
