Shortly after purchasing a second-hand vehicle, teenager Navin Bedassie lost control of his car and crashed straight into a utility pole, killing his girlfriend, Kaylee Poonan on Tuesday.
Just a day before the accident, Poonan, 18, from Peterloo Street, Friendship Village, St Johns, posted on Facebook, “No joke, mans drive like if I have extra lives.”
Police said Bedassie was driving a red Mitsubishi Lancer at high speed on the northbound side of the Solomon Hochoy Highway around 6:30 pm when he lost control. The car veered off the road and hit a pole near the Papourie Overpass. A video of the crash appeared on social media shortly after the accident.
Bedassie, 19, from #1 Pundit Street, Debe, survived but Poonan did not. Emergency services took Bedassie to San Fernando General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Fire officers had to remove Poonan’s body from the car.
Guardian Media will provide updates as more information becomes available.
