The AN proposes that Venezuela break relations with Spain

  • Sep, Wed, 2024

The parliament, controlled by Chavismo, is preparing this Wednesday a resolution that it hopes to approve later to urge Nicolás Maduro to break “all relations” diplomatic, consular, economic and commercial relations with Spain.

“Flights from Spain to and from Venezuela on Spanish airlines must cease and all commercial activities of Spanish companies must cease immediately,” said Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly.

The proposal comes after the Spanish Congress approved recognizing opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia as president-elect.

The initiative in the Spanish Congress

The Popular Party (PP), the leader of Spain’s opposition, pushed through the motion to recognise González Urrutia with 177 votes, coming from the right and nationalist groups such as the Basques, usual allies of the Socialists, who have been left in a minority with their left-wing partners.

The initiative, which has no legal significance, also calls for an end to repression, the release of political prisoners and for contributions to the personal security of María Corina Machado and González Urrutia himself, while requesting that the Executive lead the recognition of the opposition leader in the European institutions, with the aim of him taking office as president of Venezuela on January 10, 2025.

Following the presidential elections, a crisis broke out in the country due to the opposition’s accusation of “fraud” against the result announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which sparked protests throughout the country. The proposal comes after the Spanish Congress approved recognizing the opposition Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as president-elect, which left, according to authorities, 25 dead and more than 2,400 arrested.

The claim of “fraudulent” elections is supported by the largest opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), according to the publication of 83.5% of the electoral records on a website that – it insists – demonstrates González Urrutia’s victory, documents that the government considers “false”.
