Attorney General Tarek William Saab said this Wednesday that the justice system is evaluating the possibility of releasing more people arrested after the presidential elections on July 28, after 225 of the nearly 2,400 detainees were released with precautionary measures. in the context of the post-election crisis.

In the act of forming a “committee of victims of fascism”, made up of relatives of people who died and were injured after the elections, he reiterated that if there are no “elements of conviction” to demonstrate the criminal responsibility of any of the detainees, that citizen “will be released.”

«We have already seen several actions of this type. We gave the official figure over the weekend: 225 Venezuelans received less burdensome precautionary measures of deprivation of liberty,” he said, without giving details about the type of conditions that have been imposed on them.

The prosecutor, who insists that these measures have already been “executed”, announced that “other actions like this could occur” with other people who were detained after the elections, whose total verified by non-governmental organizations is 1,848.

The NGO Foro Penal, which leads the defense of political prisoners in the country, has documented 143 releases since Saab announced the granting of precautionary measures, which is why relatives of some of the detainees remain outside the prisons, especially mothers of arrested teenagers, awaiting their possible release from prison.

The main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), has demanded that the authorities disclose the list “of political prisoners benefiting from the announced measures” and has demanded their full freedom, without any measure to keep the processes open.

Saab reiterated today that, despite these case reviews, “those who are held responsible” for criminal acts – recorded after the PUD reported fraud due to the controversial re-election of Nicolás Maduro – will be “sanctioned and punished.”
