  • Sep, Tue, 2024

Peru’s new foreign minister, Elmer Schialer, He stated This Tuesday, the Peruvian government said that the situation in Venezuela “is an absolutely delicate issue” and that the Peruvian government’s position is that the country’s problems must be “resolved by Venezuelans.”

“This is an absolutely delicate issue. Our position, Peru’s, is a firm, democratic position in favor of Venezuela’s problems being resolved by Venezuelans,” Schialer said in his first statements to the press after being appointed to replace internationalist Javier González-Olaechea.

The Peruvian foreign minister added that he would comment on the details of the Venezuelan situation “later” and that he feels “very honored by this opportunity” given to him by President Dina Boluarte to take over the Foreign Office.

In recent weeks, his predecessor claimed that Nicolás Maduro won re-election in Venezuela through fraud and that “possibly” his “greatest challenge as foreign minister” was “to contribute to ending this horror.”

González-Olaechea’s departure was criticized by ultraconservative politicians such as parliamentarian José Cueto, who said that “it is a terrible decision” and criticized that it is being done when the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) leaders’ summit in Peru is approaching, as well as the official visit of presidents such as that of China, Xi Jinping.

Schialer said that Boluarte gave him “all the tasks forever, first, to keep the name of Peru high and, second, Peru first, Peru first and Peru first.”

He added that his country’s international agenda “is absolutely full” in the coming months, when meetings will be held in Lima, such as the APEC summit in November.

Boluarte made four changes to his cabinet on Tuesday in a brief ceremony held at the Government Palace in Lima, after the resignations of the outgoing officials were accepted.

In addition to Schialer, who among other positions served as Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Peruvian ambassador to Germany, Ursula Desilú León, an expert in business law, was sworn in as Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism.

Engineer Durich Whittembury assumed the portfolio of Housing, Construction and Sanitation, and lawyer Fabricio Valencia, a specialist in the legal treatment of cultural heritage, was appointed as Minister of Culture.
