The Central University of Venezuela She is the only representative of the country, according to the 2025 world list published this Wednesday by the British publication Times Higher Education (THE). It is ranked 691 out of 700.

In first place in Latin America, the University of São Paulo in Brazil advanced significantly over the past year to enter the list of the best 200. After Brazil, Chile is the Latin American country that contributes the most universities to the study with 29followed by Mexico and Colombia with 22 each, joined by Ecuador (11), Argentina (8) and Peru (6), while Paraguay, Costa Rica, Cuba and Venezuela appear with one.

The first Brazilian academic institution went from the band of positions 201-250 to 199 in a country that contributes a total of 61 centers to the global list, led by the University of Oxford for the ninth consecutive year in the UK.

The University of São Paulo shares the 199th place in the 2025 list with the University of Ulm, the University of Mannheim – both in Germany – and the Spanish Autonomous University of Barcelona.

São Paulo is followed in Latin America at some distance by the Brazilian University of Campinas, in 383rd place, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, in 555th, and the Espíritu Santo University of Ecuador, in 639th.

Asia gains ground in the Global University Rankings

In its twenty-first edition, the Global University Ranking 2025 includes 2,092 centers – 9.7% more – from 115 countries and regions, which are valued according to 18 indicators in areas such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer and internationalization, is noted in a statement.

In this regard, the TEH highlighted that Universities in Asia continue to gain ground over those in Europewhich places 91 academic institutions among the best 200, eight less than in 2019, in a trend that is especially visible in Western Europe.

The Institute of Massachusetts Technology (MIT) and the Stanford Universityboth in the United States, occupy second and third place, respectively, while the University of Barcelona is the first Spanish after advancing three places, to 149.

The United Kingdom and the United States make up the rest of the top ten, although the Asian continent, for the second consecutive year, is the one that contributes the most universities to the entire list, an honor that used to fall to Europe.

Of the 211 universities that have joined THE ranking for the first time since 2021, 60% are Asian, compared to 17% European, according to the analysis.
