First semester of 2024 with almost 100 femicides

During the first half of 2024, Venezuela registered 94 femicides, according to a report by the non-governmental organization Utopix.

That figure reflects that every 35 hours, on average, a woman was murdered, often by people close to her.

Utopix highlights the need to make these cases visible and give a voice to the victims, including women, girls and adolescents.

The number of femicides shows a slight reduction compared to the same period in 2023, when 99 cases were documented.

However, The NGO believes that its records are only part of the reality, because many crimes are not reported.

Utopix demands from the Venezuelan State and society act urgently in the face of the increase in violence and denounce impunity which often protects aggressors.

The organization also calls for the implementation of a specific plan to combat gender violence, which proposes a feminist approach to prevent and address this problem. During June, the last of the first semester, 16 femicides were recorded, 12 frustrated attempts, and 9 cases abroad.
