The Venezuelan Society of Childcare and Pediatrics urged the Ministry of Health to increase investments and coverage in vaccination soonin order to avoid the reappearance of vaccine-preventable diseases.

«It is vitally important that children and the general population have up-to-date vaccination certificates.“It is also urgent to reduce the cases of ‘zero dose children’ that have increased in the Americas and in Venezuela particularly,” reads a statement aired on Friday, October 18.

The organization warned that the population is vulnerable to diseases that can be prevented. They highlighted the case of flaccid paralysis in a child in which the Polio 3 virus was detected, reported by the WHO/PAHO.

«From the Venezuelan Society of Childcare and Pediatrics we call on the governing health entities in Venezuela to increase investment in prevention, specifically in vaccines for the child and adult population«.

They highlighted the need to acquire quality vaccines in sufficient quantity for 13V and 23V pneumococcus, rotavirus, quadrivalent meningococcus, quadrivalent seasonal influenza and HPV, which has not been available for more than a decade.

Has there been a case of polio in Venezuela?

A bulletin published this week by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) revealed that somewhere in Venezuela a case of flaccid paralysis was recorded and they confirmed that the cause is that the person has polioa viral disease that affects the spinal cord and that has not been recorded in the country for decades.

Information about the polio case in Venezuela, which was announced on social networks by pediatrician Alejandro Crespo, president of the Aragua branch of the Venezuelan Society of Childcare and Pediatrics, is scarce because the State has not published an Epidemiological Bulletin since 2016.

The expert explained that according to the little information provided by PAHO, It is not a wild virus, which is a positive thing, and it would be a derivative of the Sabin P3 vaccine.

He stressed that this does not mean that there is something wrong with the polio vaccine, but rather with the low coverage in Venezuela.
