TODAY’S HIGHLIGHTS:
Communications minister Symon De Nobriga is shutting down rumours that national security minister Fitzgerald Hinds has been fired earlier today by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley.
• De Nobriga was speaking in response to a post shared online by Guardian Media Limited’s CNC3 entitled “Hinds fired as national security minister”.
• He said: “any decision of that magnitude, that is as important as that, would come from the office of the Prime Minister and would not find its way into the public domain as the subject of a Facebook post by political operatives.”
• Hinds was appointed Minister of National Security on April 19, 2021.
Shortly after Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds on a Facebook post stated: we had a solid cabinet engagement today, treating as always, with the serious business of the nation’s affairs. as always, I admired the visionary and strong leadership of our prime minister; as well as the ideas and proposals of my colleagues. thereafter, I proceeded to the head office of the ministry of national security, where I sit. here doing my work as always! no time to lose, especially with the happy rumor-mongering, that we seem to so enjoy.
A Beetham woman was killed while attempting to cross the highway in the vicinity of the Beetham landfill yesterday afternoon.
• According to police around 6:25pm, Ester George of Beetham gardens was attempting to cross the Beetham highway when she was struck by a Silver-Grey Nissan wing road motor car driven by a Chaguanas man.
• At the time of the accident, the vehicle was proceeding west along the highway and occupying the right lane when ester crossed the east bound traffic and was struck as she entered the westbound lane of the highway.
• She died at the scene of the incident. Cpl. Baptiste of the Besson Street Police Station is probing the incident.
The Joint Select Committee (JSC) of Parliament was given the startling information that 19,000 containers entered T&T over an eight-month period without being checked by Customs Officials on Wednesday 30th November, 2022.
• Tt was also disclosed that out of 23,000 containers 19,002 of them went through the system unchecked.
• The JSC was given this information when they met with top officials of the customs and excise division to discuss the factors that are contributing to the prevalence of illegal firearms and gun violence in this country.
• The reason given for the containers going unchecked is that there are no longer any working scanners at any of the major seaports across the country.
• The customs officials also indicated that the scanners donated by the United States are no longer working and need to be replaced.
The country has recorded 46 murders for the month of November, 2022 thus far.
• Of the killings, 41 took place with the use of firearms while one (1) woman was beaten to death, (3) persons were stabbed and (1) man’s head was decapitated.
