Four months after he was first arrested by officers of the Special Investigation Unit, Christopher “Chris Must List” Hughes was detained again—this time for allegations that he and/or his electronic devices may have been used for money laundering.
According to police sources, Hughes was held at the Diego Martin home of attorney Criston WIlliams, where his bail conditions mandated he stay while in the country. Police said his Apple laptop, iPhone, portable hard drive, GoPro camera and other devices were seized by police earlier today as part of an ongoing investigation into money laundering.
The 45-year-old is currently charged with making a seditious publication and has pleaded not guilty to the offence, which goes to trial in January. If found guilty, Hughes—who is out on $100,000 bail—faces a $3,000 fine or two years imprisonment.
Hughes was first held in May and his electronic devices were seized then. After he was charged, his then-attorney Pamela Elder SC requested that his devices be returned and for the police to keep the memory cards.
It is unclear if this was done.
Hughes is currently being questioned by officers of the SIU.
Days before his last court appearance, Hughes said he fired his attorneys Elder and Russell Warner over a nearly $US50,000 invoice for two appearances.
At his last court appearance, Warner said both Elder and himself withdrew from representing him. Former attorney general Anand Ramlogan, who was representing Hughes pro bono on behalf of the Canadian Embassy, also withdrew his representation.
