More assurance from the Police Service that it is doing all in its power to effectively address the current crime scourge plaguing Trinidad and Tobago.

It has come from Media Ambassador for the Police Service, ASP Rajesh Lal, as he responded to concerns echoed by the business community in Tobago.

In assessing the crime situation on the sister isle, the chairman of the Tobago Chamber of Commerce, Martin George, told Guardian Media that the police “seem clueless and helpless and they are clearly failing in their job.”

However, ASP Rajesh Lal points out that to the contrary, the TTPS’ crime fighting strategies are always being reviewed to ensure their effectiveness.

“Crime is dynamic and it’s always changing,” he observed.  “We are always going back to the drawing board to make sure we have a proper response.”

“There has been an increase in the number of officers from the Inter-Agency Task Force, the Guard and Emergency Branch, the Multi-Operational Policing Section,” he reports.  “We have seen a large number of officers going across from the Special Investigations Units, as well as close collaboration with the SSA, to ensure that intelligence is received, and we are acting on those intelligence reports received.  However, we are also pleading with members of the public to provide that information.”

ASP Lal called for an ‘all-hands-on-deck’ approach, saying that crime reduction requires the efforts of all sectors of society.

“The people are the police, and the police are the people, and we all have to work together,” the TTPS spokesman said.

“It is not about ‘them against us’,” he asserts.  “We all have to work together to make Trinidad and Tobago safe.”

He added: “We are looking for the support of the law-abiding members of the public.  The law-abiding community leaders—clergymen, the pundits, the priests, the teachers, the principals—to get together.  The parents… Everybody has a responsibility.”

ASP Lall was a guest on today’s edition of CNC3’s The Morning Brew show.
