TTPS to relaunch anti-bullying campaign in South

  • Oct, Tue, 2024

A Trinidad and Tobago Police Service-led anti-bullying campaign will be relaunched in South Trinidad soon.

This was the word from Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Wayne Mystar yesterday, after he visited 15-year-old Jayden Lalchan’s family.

Jayden took his own life on October 3 after allegedly being bullied at St Stephen’s College for several years.

Yesterday, Mystar paid a visit to the family’s Broomage Road, Princes Town home and spoke with Jayden’s aunt Radhaika Ramjohn.

Speaking with reporters following the visit, Mystar said the anti-bullying campaign, when launched, will target schools in the Southern Division, followed by the South Western and then the Central Division.

He explained that the campaign was first launched in the Northern Division some time ago but was not kept up. Given the current situation surrounding Jayden, Mystar said that there was “no better time to start back than now to bring that level of awareness as it relates to bullying.”

He reiterated that a probe was ongoing into the circumstances that led to Jayden’s death and when completed, a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). He said several people will be interviewed, including the school’s principal, teachers and students.

Mystar also made an appeal for people with information regarding any acts of bullying to come forward, as he stressed it is a criminal offence.

“Parents, if you are not getting redress, come to the police station, make those reports and we are going to investigate those reports. We have zero tolerance for bullying in all forms and fashion,” he said.

Jayden’s funeral takes place at JRD Convention Centre, St Croix Road, Princes Town, at noon today, followed by a private cremation at J.E. Guides Funeral and Crematorium in San Fernando today.
