Two dead and four missing after the sinking of a Zulia boat

This Thursday morning the sinking of a boat with 25 crew members was reported on the Eastern Coast of Lake Maracaibo (Zulia). This is a Chantise G barge belonging to a contracting company that provides service to Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA).

The incident originated in the southern area of ​​Chevron at Block 1 of Lake Maracaibo, Simón Bolívar municipality of Zulia state. “It is presumed that this vessel was carrying out activities in said block, when it was reported that water was entering through the stern,” said analyst Jesús Fernández.

During the early morning, adverse weather conditions were recorded for carrying out work on the lake. Around 4:00 in the morning, when the report was made to the COA (Annual Operation Certificate), it was reported that two vessels were assigned. The Sara I and My City boats began the rescue.

There were 25 crew members in the operations carried out by the contracting company Servicios y Obras Sudamericanas (Sosca). Among them were a captain, two motorcyclists, a mechanic, three kitchen workers, a diver, four workers and other employees.

At 6:00 am it was unofficially known that in the accident of the Chantise G boat, 2 of the 25 workers were found dead, 19 were rescued and 4 are missing.

The oil industry workers would have set sail on Wednesday to the waters near the COL. They worked under the 7×7 system (7 days of work for 7 days of rest), according to the COA report.

Electrical storm and high waves in COL

Since Wednesday, the presence of wave number 39 in the COL was estimated, with strong storms to the north and center. This was the forecast of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh).

The electrical storm, hurricane-force winds and high waves would be among the causes of the shipwreck.
