Unitary Platform demands the release of Roland Carreño
The largest opposition coalition in Venezuela, Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), demanded this Saturday the release of the opponent Roland Carreño, whom he claims was detained by “intelligence bodies of the Nicolás Maduro regime” last August.
Through X, The PUD demanded that the collaborator of the Voluntad Popular (VP) formation be released “immediately,” as well as all the “political prisoners.” coded at 164 by the Vente Venezuela party – founded by the opposition leader Maria Corina Machado-, among which they include national leaders and people who held elected positions when they were arrested.
«Wanting change for Venezuela is not a crime. “Doing politics is not a crime,” stated the PUD.
This is the second time Carreño has been arrested. He was also arrested on October 26, 2020, when he was accused of financing terrorism, conspiracy against the political form, and illicit trafficking in weapons of war. He was released from prison on October 18 of last year, following an agreement signed then between the government and the Unitary Platform in Barbados.
The new arrest occurred after the presidential elections on July 28, when the authorities arrested more than 2,400 people, according to the Executive, some of them in protests against the official result – which gave Maduro re-election – and others in police operations. and soldiers ordered by the Government, which denounced a coup against them.
This Saturday, relatives of detainees in Venezuela completed a prayer vigil that began a day earlier near the Tocuyito prison, in the state of Carabobo (north), to ask for the freedom of all those considered political prisoners, according to the NGO Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners.
Recently, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, assured that the Caribbean country is “free of political prisoners”, a statement criticized by the opposition and various social sectors.
