USAF BMT Airman’s Coin & Retreat Ceremony: Flights: 661-676 — October 23, 2024
More than 700 Airmen assigned to Flights 661-676 receive their Airman’s coin during the 737th Training Group’s Coin and Retreat Ceremony, at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, October 23, 2024. The ceremony is one of three Department of the Air Force, Basic Military Training graduation events and signifies the transition from trainee to Airman. Lt. Col. James R. Collins, 324th Training Squadron, Director of Operations, and Chief Master Sgt. Tiffany N. Jackson-Foster, 324 TRS Senior Enlisted Leader, were the guest speakers for the ceremony. The 37th Training Wing, known as the “Gateway to the Air Force” is home to BMT.
Flights begin marching on to the Retreat Pad to receive their Airman’s Coin. This ceremony signifies the end of Basic Training. The Coin Ceremony marks the official transition from trainee to Airman. The Retreat portion immediately follows the Coin Ceremony. During Retreat, the U.S. Flag is paid tribute, brought down, folded and safeguarded. After Retreat, Airmen will sing the Air Force Song, the Airman’s Creed and then be dismissed for Town Pass. Families move on to the Retreat Pad to greet and congratulate their Airman. The tradition is that Airmen must be “tapped out” in order to be released to their visitors. To Tap Out your Airman, simply tap him or her on the shoulder.
