The governments of Venezuela and Russia are committed to strengthening their political alliance and economic cooperation, according to a note released this Saturday by the Foreign Ministry of Nicolás Maduro, which reported a meeting between its Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, and the ambassador of the Eurasian giant in Caracas, Sergey Mélik-Bagdasárov.

The meeting, of which no further details were known, took place at the headquarters of the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry and served to “strengthen the political alliance and promote economic cooperation,” according to the official writing.

The meeting was held within the framework of “the new multipolar dynamics that seek the sovereign and free development” of the peoples of both nations, according to Gil on Telegram, where he shared photographs of the meeting.

Talks between the Russian ambassador and senior representatives of the Chavista executive are frequent, since the governments in Caracas and Moscow maintain intense cooperation, which includes 16 agreements – signed last October – in the areas of energy, oil, tourism, culture and education, among other areas.

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putinwas one of the first leaders to congratulate Nicolás Maduro on his “re-election” in the July 28 elections in Venezuela, while numerous Western governments refuse to recognize the victory and demand greater transparency from the electoral authorities, as well as the publication of the voting records.

Meanwhile, Maduro considers Putin a defender of democracy and the “anti-fascist struggle,” and has reiterated his unrestricted support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
