Venezuela revokes Brazil’s permission to guard Argentine embassy

  • Sep, Sat, 2024

The administration of Nicolás Maduro revoked this Saturday the authorization it had granted to Brazil, at the beginning of August, to Represent the interests of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas -which included guarding the premises of the southern country in Venezuela- for the alleged planning of terrorist acts inside said premises, by asylum-seeking opponents.

According to a statement from the Executive, “Venezuela is forced to make this decision motivated by the evidence that exists on the use of the facilities of this diplomatic mission for the planning of terrorist activities and assassination attempts” against Nicolas Maduro Moros and Delcy Rodriguez.

The measure was announced following complaints made by the asylum-seeking opponents who, since Friday night, claimed that Several police officers surrounded and besieged the residence of the Argentine Embassy in the Venezuelan capital.

What happened to the permits given to Brazil by Venezuela to represent Argentina?

Asylum seeker Magalli Meda reported that the entrances to the diplomatic residence remain “occupied” by police officers on Saturday.

For its part, the opposition party led by Machado, Vente Venezuela (VV), denounced in X that the headquarters woke up “surrounded by agents of the regime”hooded and armed.”

In this regard, Omar González, a member of the VV party and also an asylum seeker, denounced on the same social network that “security agents of the Maduro regime do not allow journalists to approach the headquarters of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas.”

This Friday, the International Coordinator of VV, Pedro Urruchurtu, also a refugee, reported the presence of agents from the Directorate of Strategic and Tactical Actions (DAET) of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) and the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (Sebin).

In addition to Urruchurtu, Meda and González, Claudia Macero, VV’s Communications Coordinator, Humberto Villalobos, electoral coordinator of the VV Campaign Command, and former minister Fernando Martínez Mottola, advisor to the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), the main opposition bloc, are also in asylum.

The six opposition members sought refuge last March after the Public Prosecutor’s Office accused them of several crimes, including conspiracy and treason.
