The Venezuelan ambassador in Madrid, Gladys Gutiérrez, has already left Spain after being called for consultations on Thursday by the government of Nicolás Madurowhich denounced “insolent, interventionist and rude” statements by the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles.

Hours after Robles referred to the Venezuelan government as a “dictatorship,” the Foreign Ministry announced that it was summoning the Spanish ambassador in Caracas, Ramón Santos, and calling its representative in Madrid for consultations, without going into further details.

The Venezuelan ambassador has already left Spainaccording to sources familiar with the trip consulted by Europa Press, while the meeting between the Spanish ambassador and a representative of the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry in Caracas is still pending.

This diplomatic retaliation follows a call by the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, to review bilateral relations with Spain in response to the approval in the Congress of Deputies of a proposal urging the recognition of opposition leader Edmundo González as president-elect. Rodríguez compared this initiative to a “declaration of war.”
