Venezuelans in Belgium demand recognition of Edmundo González

Fifty people gathered this Saturday in Brussels, Belgium, to ask for the recognition of the opponent Edmundo González Urrutia as the winner of the elections in Venezuela, in which the Government declared the triumph of the current president, Nicolás Maduro, and which the opposition considers a fraud.

They were also celebrated concentrations in five other Belgian cities (Antwerp, Liège, Mons, Tervuren and Turhout) that are part of the ‘worldwide protest’ called for today by anti-Chavismo, which expects demonstrations in Venezuela and 53 other countries just when two months have passed since the controversial elections and coinciding with the UN General Assembly in New York.

«We want three points to be clarified: The first is for Venezuela to obtain its democratic freedom“The second is to recognize Edmundo González Urrutia as president of Venezuela, who won the July 28 elections with 7.1 million votes, equivalent to 67% of the voting mass,” he told EFE María P. Arreaza, representative of the Veneuropa organization that has called for the protests in Belgium.

The third objective, he adds, is «demand action from the International Criminal Court to make decisions regarding the crimes against humanity” that the Maduro regime would have committed, in response to the files that have already been presented to that court.

“It is important that there is international attention and that is why in this period in which the United Nations General Assembly is being held we want the issue of Venezuela to be voted on, for there to be a decision by the majority of democratic countries so that a decision is made. action against what is happening in Venezuela,” he explains.

Venezuelans defend opposition victory from Belgium

In this sense, they also ask other international organizations such as the European Union – whose main institutions are based in Brussels – to “make concrete decisions to see a free Venezuela” and in defense of human and democratic rights.

«Venezuela’s problem is not just a problem for Venezuela. “The problem of Venezuela becomes a problem for the countries of the region, but also for European countries,” says Arreaza, recalling that of the almost eight million Venezuelans who have left the country due to the political, economic or security situation , many have gone to Europe.

Therefore, in addition to displaying banners asking “freedom for Venezuela”, the “end of torture” or the departure of Maduro, they have distributed pamphlets among passersby in which they explain their position and urge them to write to local authorities asking them to “denounce the fraud and support the Venezuelan democratic opposition.”

After the July 28 elections, the National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed Nicolás Maduro the winner, but has not yet published the disaggregated results to confirm it – as its official schedule provided – despite the claims of the opposition and a good part of the international community.

Meanwhile, the opposition claims the victory of González Urrutia, who has been exiled in Spain since September 8, based on more than 80% of the minutes collected from witnesses and polling station members, which the Government considers false.
