Venezuela’s international air connectivity decreased by 50%

Venezuela’s international air connectivity fell more than 50% since July after the breaking of diplomatic relations of the government of Nicolás Maduro with several countries in the region, which questioned the results of the presidential election.

Vicky Herrera, president of the Venezuelan Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies, expressed to the Voice of America the difficulty of maintaining Venezuela as an attractive destination due to the problems in accessing the country.

«It is difficult to think that anyone could have Venezuela as a tourist destination among their alternatives. when it is so difficult for him to get to this country,” he stated.

In addition, he highlighted that the situation affects not only tourism, but also commerce, business, family reunions and even health care.

On July 29, the Venezuelan government “temporarily” suspended flights to and from Panama, Peru and the Dominican Republic, significantly affecting international connections. And later he expanded the list.

«With the suspension of the three destinations, which are Panama, the Dominican Republic and Peru, “95 weekly flights were suspended,” Herrera specified.

Panama and the Dominican Republic were key connection points for other destinations, including the United States.

Given this situation, Colombia has become one of the main options for those looking to travel to Central America, South America and North America. “Colombia becomes one of the main alternatives for anyone who wants to travel,” said Herrera.

Despite the cancellations, Venezuela maintains flights with Curacao, Spain, Turkey, Portugal, Barbados, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, as well as with Saint Vincent, Nicaragua, Cuba, Bolivia, Brazil and Moscow.
