Waterspout destroyed 16 homes in Nueva Esparta

A waterspout that formed this week destroyed 16 homes, most of them ranch-type, in the Brisas del Mar sectoron the road to La Isleta, in the García de la municipality Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta State.

More than 50 people, including adults and children, were affected by the unprecedented natural phenomenon in the area, according to an assessment provided by the mayor of the García municipality, Cruz Lairet.

The municipal leader indicated that The mayor’s office is in charge of the work to put the roofs on 16 affected homes and the management of obtaining household goods. Lairet explained that the sheets are even being bought in hardware stores to provide an immediate response to these people.

One of those affected, Evelio Ramón Vizcaíno, told the media Daisy Sun He said he lost everything because of the waterspout. He said he was on his way home when the phenomenon occurred, but he was unable to run because of a disability in one of his legs.

When he arrived at the worst affected area, his son told him that they had lost everything. He was thankful that he had not been at home when the waterspout appeared because he would have been swept away.

Security forces are monitoring Brisas del Mar and vulnerable areas of Nueva Esparta state in anticipation of the rains.
